Energy Star
Energy Star is a U.S government program that regulates the rating systems of many home appliances such as refrigerators, computers, washing machines, televisions, and air conditioners. The program is managed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy and was created in 1992 to advocate energy efficient products. Computers and monitors were the first appliances to use the energy star labeling system. Now the energy star logo can be found with over 50 products. The program is beneficial in helping consumers select products that are more energy efficient by implementing a strict set of standards and labeling the product with the Energy Star logo. On average a household will spend about $2000 per year on utilities. Since Energy Star products use 30% less energy that's a savings of $600 per year. Energy guide ratings for appliances usually show their kilowatt-hours per year (kwh) on a scale that shows the least amount of energy used on one end of the scale and the most amount of energy on the other end. The rating also shows the models estimated yearly operating cost. Recenty, the Energy Star program has been extended to include homes and commercial buildings. Energy star homes are generally quiter, have lower utility costs, and use less energy, helping the environment by reducing the amount of green house gas emissions. Energy star homes use better ducts that are insulated and sealed with mastics. This creates better heating and cooling efficiency and minimizes dust, moisture, pollen and pests. Energy Star homes also include Energy Star windows, doors and skylights. They provide better insulation and keep homes cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The EPA has Energy Star homes inspected by independent Home Energy Raters who run performance tests on the duct systems to ensure that the home meets all of the compliancy requirements. The raters are equipped with infrared cameras that measure leakages and pinpoint areas where hot air and cold air drafts cause problems. Energy Star homes are also 30% more efficient than traditional homes. There are 6 key features to an energy star home:
- Effective Insulation
- High performance windows
- Tight construction and ducts
- Efficient heating and cooling equipment
- Efficient products (energy star)
- 3rd party verification
